The 2009 Kentucky Derby winner, Mine That Bird, worked out over the track at Churchill Downs this morning, covering a half-mile in 49.40 seconds and galloping out five furlongs in 1:01.80. Mine That Bird is being pointed to the West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Racetrack and Casino on August 1 for his next start by trainer Chip Woolley. Woolley intends to work Mine That Bird each of the next two Mondays at Churchill Downs.
The connections settled the rider problem they had by going back to Mike Smith, who rode the Derby winner to a game second in the 2009 Preakness behind fabulous filly, Rachel Alexandra. Calvin Borel has committed to ride Warrior's Reward in the Jim Dandy at Saratoga on the same date as the West Virginia Derby.
Tune in tomorrow for more from They Are Off. For right now, I am Gone... GOODBYE!
